3-D Printing FAQ

The UPS Store 0393 3-D Printing FAQs

1. How much is it to print? - The cost to print an item is based solely on the amount of material used in the printing. This can be deceiving as some large pieces require very little material and some smaller pieces require a lot. The amount of material required can be affected by orientation of the piece during printing, the interior fill, strength requirements, and various other factors. The best way to find out a price is to either bring in or email the file you want printed and we can give you an accurate quote very quickly.

2. What type of file is needed?
- In order to print an item in 3D we need an .stl CAD file. At this time we only have the ability to check current .stl files to make sure they are good files to print and fix minor imperfections. In the future we hope to add CAD design services to our offerings, but currently do not.

3. What type of machine do you use?
- We use a Stratasys uPrint SE Plus. The uPrint SE Plus a professional grade 3D printer designed to accurately and reliably produce complex engineering parts, prototypes, and one of a kind objects. The heated build chamber and soluble supports allow entrepreneurs, engineers, home inventors and makers to produce parts true to their designs. Many of the challenging and time consuming steps used to prepare a simpler printer are fully automated on the uPrint SE Plus, leading to added precision, reliability and a success rate that is unmatched by a home printer.

4. What type of printing technology does your machine use?
- Our Stratasys uPrint SE Plus uses FDM technology. FDM builds concept models, functional prototypes and end-use parts in standard, engineering-grade and high-performance thermoplastics. It's the only professional 3D printing technology that uses production-grade thermoplastics, so parts are unrivaled in mechanical, thermal and chemical strength. 3D printers that run on FDM Technology build parts layer-by-layer from the bottom up by heating and extruding thermoplastic filament.

5. What type of filament/ material is used?
- Our uPrint SE Plus uses ABSplus. ABSplus offers the widest range of colors available with FDM Technology (ivory, white, black, dark gray, red, blue, olive green, nectarine and fluorescent yellow), plus the option for custom colors. Parts 3D printed in this material are mechanically strong and stable over time. Because ABSplus works with soluble support materials, support removal is hands-free, and complex shapes and deep cavities require no extra effort.

6. Can you make articulating pieces?
- Yes! Our 3D printer is capable of making fully articulating parts that do not require assembly. This is made possible by the use of soluble support materials.

7. How large can one piece be?
- Each part can be no bigger than 6x6x8. The most common way around size limitation is to print a large piece in multiple parts.
